Patricia Haynes is again holding her Toys for Children party in Providence, RI on December 16. This is the 13th year for her fabulous party - bring a toy or two for a child and pay $15 at the door (at the Black Rep on Westminster Street) and have a wonderful feast with terrific music. This year she is featuring Flipside. The party starts at 4 pm and goes until about 8. Call 401-699-4078 if you have any questions. This is the biggest grassroots, hometown, charitable party you will go to this winter!
Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Mon, 11/26/2007 - 02:48 — Sara FerreeI know we are past Halloween, but I have to say that I have always loved the idea of the little orange boxes for trick or treating for UNICEF. I remember doing this when I was a child. I saw the boxes in Pier 1 Imports at the beginning of October, and I picked one up intending to collect a little and send it in, but I never got around to it. I always felt good about collecting money for a cause instead of only receiving candy to spoil myself - and my teeth. Next year I will get on this earlier and help publicize it, but here's the web link: http://www.unicefusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=hkIXLdMRJtE&b=1706865
Trick or Treat - for Thanksgiving!
Numbers
Mon, 11/26/2007 - 02:43 — Sara FerreeIn the Chronicle of Philanthropy I saw some facts I think are worth mentioning:
2.6 billion people in the world lack sanitation facilities
1 billion don't have access to clean water
Update
Thu, 11/08/2007 - 00:16 — Sara FerreeWell, working and being a mother has gotten the best of my intentions to keep this blog up to date, but I have been keeping an eye on policy and development throughout the world.
China is everywhere - so much so that I have begun Mandarin. It seems that every evening there is at least one news item on the radio or tv about China and its growth, its people, its use of internet warfare, Yahoo and multinational corporations operating in China, the rise of Chinese philanthropists - and more and more. I have read that parents are having their children learn Mandarin at a young age now. Schools are offering classes, lectures, and language programs on China. It's an exciting opportunity.
